Dental Cleaning
During a dental cleaning, tartar, plaque and surface staining are removed from the teeth. Dental cleaning often takes place alongside a regular dental check-up, but if a significant amount of tartar has built up or the gums are inflamed, it may be better to book a separate appointment. At Tannlæknaþjónustan, both dentists and dental hygienists provide dental cleanings. At our Selfoss and Reykjavík clinics, you can book a dedicated appointment with a dental hygienist.
What is tartar?
Plaque, a layer of bacteria, constantly forms on the teeth. If it is not removed through brushing and cleaning between the teeth, minerals in saliva can cause it to harden and become tartar.
Tartar can form both above and below the gum line. It attaches firmly to the surface of the teeth and cannot be removed through regular toothbrushing. Its rough surface makes it easier for plaque to build up, which can contribute to inflammation of the gums.
What happens during a dental cleaning?
Tartar is removed using specialised dental instruments and a device that uses sound waves to create vibrations that loosen the tartar from the teeth. The teeth are then usually polished to remove surface stains, such as those caused by coffee, tea or tobacco. Surface staining can also sometimes be removed using an air-polishing device that uses fine particles and air pressure to remove the discolouration.
A routine dental cleaning is generally not painful. However, if there is a significant amount of tartar or the gums are inflamed, you may experience temporary discomfort or sensitivity. Treatment can be adapted to your needs, and the area can be numbed if necessary.
What does a dental hygienist do?
A dental hygienist is a licensed healthcare professional who specialises in preventive dental care, dental cleaning and oral hygiene education. A dental hygienist examines the mouth, removes tartar and plaque, polishes the teeth and provides personalised guidance on brushing and cleaning between the teeth.
Dental hygienists work closely with dentists on prevention and the treatment of gum disease. If signs of tooth decay, gum disease or another condition requiring further examination are detected, you will be referred to a dentist. An appointment with a dental hygienist therefore does not always replace a regular dental examination.
How often do I need a dental cleaning?
The need for dental cleaning varies from person to person. For many people, cleaning alongside regular dental check-ups is sufficient. Those who build up a lot of tartar, have gum inflammation or gum disease may need to have separate dental cleaning appointments more frequently.
Your dentist or dental hygienist will assess your needs with you and recommend how often dental cleaning is necessary.
