Clear aligner orthodontics
Minor bite issues or tooth misalignments are a common problem that until now could only be treated with fixed orthodontic appliances, so-called braces. Today, it is possible to straighten teeth using clear aligners that are nearly invisible and removable. The system we use at Tannlæknaþjónustan is called Ordoline, and behind it are orthodontic specialists who assist with treatment planning and provide support throughout the entire process.
What are invisible orthodontics?
Clear aligner orthodontics is sometimes called invisible orthodontics because they are barely noticeable. The aligners are worn in the mouth throughout the day and night except when eating and drinking. It is recommended that they are worn for 22 hours per day. The aligners are changed every 7–10 days, and treatment can take 6–20 months. At Tannlæknaþjónustan we treat mild crowding, minor misalignments, or bite issues with clear aligners, and in most cases treatment takes less than a year. More complex cases are referred to specialist orthodontists.
What are the advantages of aligner treatment?
Aligner treatment has many advantages compared to fixed braces, especially in simpler cases. They are nearly invisible and painless. You do not need to attend check-ups as often, only every 3–4 months compared to every 1–2 months with braces. Emergency visits are rare, and the aligners are comfortable and removable when needed. They have no impact on oral hygiene since you can brush your teeth as normal. Last but not least, you can eat anything during treatment, as you simply remove the aligners while eating.
How is the preparation done?
It is important to perform a thorough dental examination before treatment to ensure that all teeth are healthy and that fillings and other restorations are in good condition. It is not recommended to perform dental work during treatment, as this may affect how the aligners fit.
Your teeth and bite are scanned using a 3D scanner, and 3D X-rays and photographs are taken to provide the clearest possible overview of the situation. This information is used to create a customized treatment plan with the help of orthodontic specialists from the Ordoline system. At your next appointment, your dentist will review the treatment plan with you and show you the expected final result.
How does the treatment work?
You begin using the aligners as soon as you receive them. You change aligners every 7–10 days depending on instructions. You will need check-ups every 3–4 months to monitor progress. In most cases, small attachments are bonded to certain teeth to help the aligners apply pressure and move the teeth.
What are the aligners made of?
The material used in the aligners is clear BPA-free medical-grade plastic. The aligners are thin and fit closely to the teeth. The plastic is polished for added comfort.
How is the long-term result maintained?
After treatment is completed, retainers are made to keep the teeth in their new position. These retainers must be worn at least every night. Sometimes a fixed retainer wire is placed behind the front teeth, especially in the lower jaw.
