What is a veneer?

Unlike a traditional crown, a veneer only covers the front surface of the tooth. This means that significantly less of the natural tooth structure usually needs to be removed than when a traditional crown is placed.

Veneers can be suitable for correcting discoloured or worn teeth, minor chips, irregular tooth shape and gaps between teeth. Porcelain reflects light in a similar way to natural enamel, and the colour and texture of the veneer can be matched to the surrounding teeth.

Are veneers suitable for everyone?

Before treatment is decided upon, the teeth, gums and bite need to be carefully examined. The teeth need to be healthy, and any tooth decay or gum inflammation must be treated before veneers are placed.

Veneers are not always suitable if teeth are extensively damaged, have large fillings or are significantly misaligned. In these cases, another treatment, such as composite bonding, a traditional crown or orthodontic treatment, may be more appropriate. If you clench or grind your teeth, you may need to use a night guard to protect the veneers.

We always aim to choose the most conservative treatment possible and preserve as much healthy tooth structure as we can. Sometimes the desired change can be achieved with teeth whitening, composite bonding or orthodontic treatment without the need for veneers.

How does the treatment work?

Treatment begins with an examination and a discussion about what you would like to change. Photographs are often taken and the teeth are scanned using a 3D scanner. This information is used to plan the shape, colour and overall appearance of the treatment.

Usually, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front surface of the tooth to create space for the veneer, although the amount depends on the individual circumstances. As some tooth structure is removed, the treatment is generally not reversible.

After the teeth have been prepared, they are scanned using a 3D scanner. The scan is then sent to a dental laboratory where the veneers are custom-made. Temporary veneers may be placed while the permanent ones are being made. Once the veneers are ready, they are carefully tried in and the colour, shape and bite are checked before they are permanently bonded to the teeth.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers can last for many years when they are bonded to healthy enamel, the bite is favourable and the teeth are well cared for. However, like other dental restorations, they can break, become loose or eventually need to be replaced.

Teeth with veneers should be brushed twice a day and cleaned between the teeth every day. Regular dental check-ups are important to monitor the veneers, gums and the natural tooth structure underneath them.

How much do veneers cost?

The cost depends on the number of veneers, the materials used and any preparatory treatment required before the veneers can be placed. You can see examples of our prices in our price list. A veneer generally costs the same as a traditional crown.
